Diet doesn't seem to be working...
Well, I got my mealplan book from the dietitian the other day. I started to follow some of the meals outlined in the book but unfortunately, I don't think this diet is working. Some of the recommendations seem pretty ridiculous to me (i.e. 2 pieces of fruit, some nuts and milk with protein powder for breakfast, a small can of tuna with a couple of slices of green pepper and a stick of skim mozzarella cheese for lunch). After two days of this type of diet, I really started feeling dizzy and hungry as well as losing concentration. I wasn't able to focus at work and could not do my job very well. As a result, my performance began to suffer not only at work but also at swim practice. Friday night's practice was a joke as I had no energy at all to do any of the sets. At that point, I said enough was enough and decided to modify the original diet that they gave me to add more complex carbohydrates. They say that swimmers need those anyway. I guess I'll just have to watch which ones I eat. It's better to have energy and maybe lose weight more slowly than feel hungry and weak all the time I say. However, I still plan to stick with the protein powder as I think it will help me in the long run and I enjoy eating it. Let's hope that it works out for the best.
I'm not sure if it's the diet or what it is.. but I feel really worn out this past week.. it seems like I've been hit with a mack truck or something... Maybe I just need some rest. I'm going back to Ontario in a week or so to visit with some friends and family. I'm looking forward to that. It should be invigorating I think. I'm also going to try and do some training over the holidays to keep up my conditioning... I won't be back until January 6 or so. Maybe after a good night sleep also I'll feel better. Let's wait and see what happens.

Stick with your diet Damien. Feeling dizzy, weak, and hungry are to be expected in the first few weeks. It’ll get better as your body starts to adapt to the diet. Right now your body is throwing a tantrum – up to now there have always been plenty of carbohydrates readily at hand to draw on; but with the new diet it’s being forced to go into its fat storage and make its own carbohydrates. Your dizzy spells are a result of your system not breaking down enough fat to keep you going (it seems your body is hoping you’ll resume consuming those wonderful complex carbs it’s so used to and so avoid all that work!) It will get better with some more practice. I am surprised at how little you’re eating though. Your diet sounds more like a ‘diet’ rather than a proper nutritional plan you should be following for the rest of your life. Where’s your breakfast cereal or porridge? No fruit for lunch? I’d go back to your nutritionist and discuss your concerns and come up with a new plan. But under no circumstances should you start picking and choosing what you’ll follow and what you won’t. That way is a guaranteed path to failure! Nothing good comes easily.
I agree, modify, but don't give it up just yet!! If you're feeling a need for more carbs though, I'm a big fan of whole grains...instead of bread, eat rice! And brown if possible. Instead of cereal, eat oatmeal. The less processed the food the better! But I'm no nutritionist! I just think your body get a lot more from it! And it feels much more filling to me!
Once you get into a new routine, your body will adapt. But the adjustment period is NEVER easy!!
Happy Holidays!
Thanks for the Christmas card and GC.
